Se usan cinco formas principales para expresar futuro


1. Will / won’t

Forma: 
will/won't + base form

Ejemplo: will play
Se usa para 

a) predicciones en el futuro. Decimos los que creemos que pasara o no pasará. Va muchas veces con "I think", "I'm sure".(simple predictions).
  • Will you come to see me at the concert?
  • I'm sure he won't come.

b) promesas y ofrecimientos de ayuda (willingness, promises)
  • I will help you with your homework.

c) decisiones rápidas (que tomamos sobre la marcha, no previstas antes de hablar).(quick decisions)
  • I like this one. I will buy it!
2. be going to / be not going to

Forma: 
am/is/are going + to verb

Ejemplo: am/is/are going to play
Se usa para 

a) planes e intenciones futuras. 
  • I have bought a flat and I'm going to decorate it.

b) cosas que crees que van a pasar basadas en la evidencia. (prediction based on present evidence)
  • The glass is going to break. (Está rodando por la mesa)
3. Present continuous

Forma
am/is/are doing

Ejemplo: 
am/is/are playing
Se usa para 
a) planes y arreglos definitivos, que están acordados entre más de una persona. Generalmente se menciona cuándo se va a hacer, o cuando sucederá.
  • I'm meeting Maria tomorrow at seven.

4. Present simple

Forma
Base form of verb (play)
Third person singular with –s or –es.

Ejemplo:
Play, plays
Finish, finishes
Se usa para 

a) Expresar lo que sucederá de acuerdo a horarios programados por empresas, medios de transporte, espectáculos, clases, etc. 
No se trata de una planificación personal. 
Siempre se menciona la hora.
  • What time will you come home? I finish work at 7.
  •  Chelsea play next Monday.
  •  The show finishes at 7.

5. May/might

Forma
Es un verbo modal como can. Se pone delante del verbo base.
May come
Might come.

Tiene la misma forma para todas las personas.
Se usa para 

a) expresar cosas que creemos que pueden suceder, pero manifestando duda.
  • We may see Maria at the meeting.



b) Expresar un deseo de forma prudente, ya que no estamos seguros que podamos hacerlo o la otra persona quiera hacerlo.
  • We might buy this car.



6. Future continuous

Forma
Will be + doing

Ejemplo: 
will be playing
Se usa para 

Expresar acciones que sucederán en un tiempo futuro, como sucede siempre.
  • You can call me tomorrow. I'll be working at home in the morning.

Expresar lo que estaremos haciendo en un tiempo puntual del futuro.
  • Tomorrow at 7,  I’ll be picking you up at the airport.

FUTURE TIME EXERCISES


  1. Choose which intention (a-h) is expressed with each blue verb below (1-15). Then say which tense it is. Follow the example.
  1. A tentative prediction
  2. An action in progress in the future
  3. An action or event that is a matter of routine

EXAMPLE:

  4. I’m going to pick you up, don’t take the bus. (plan or intention)
  5. If we don’t do anything about it, we’ll run out of water in three years. (prediction)
  6. Mary will help you with your homework, if you ask her. (predicton)
  7. My mother may come this weekend, so you will have to empty the room. (doubt)
  8. Sally will come with us, I’m sure. (prediction)
  9. She might call later, dont worry. (doubt)
  10. The train to Barcelona leaves at 7 o’clock from platform 3. (timetable)
  11. There is going to be a storm. There are black clouds. (present evidence)
  12. There will be a storm soon. (prediction)
  13. We always take the morning flight. It leaves a 8:30. (timetable)
  14. We’ll be working in the garden at the weekend, you can call us. (prediction about a particular time or moment)
  15. What will hapen after the show? Will they leave or stay in town? (
