PASSIVE VOICE

Active and Passive forms

We usually use active forms when we speak. They are all the forms we have seen so far (Unit Starter to 5)
Generalmente usamos la voz activa al hablar, son las formas verbales que hemos estudiado hasta la unidad 5.
Active (Simple Forms)
Simple PresentI live in Spain now
Simple PastI lived in India when I was a child
Present PerfectI have lived in many countries
Past PerfectI had lived in India before I came to Spain
will futureI will live in other countries in the future
Future PerfectI will have lived in ten countries before I retire 
ConditionalI would live in more countries if I had time
Conditional PerfectI would have lived in Spain before, but I didn't know it
Pasive forms are often used when we want to give importance to the object of the sentence:
Example: We usually drive to University. I am driven to Universit
Passive (Simple Forms)
Simple PresentThe wall is painted every year.
Simple PastThis portrait was painted by a famous painter.
Present PerfectThe room has been painted recently
Past PerfectThe house had been painted before we arrived.
will-futureThe living room will be painted soon.

MODAL VERBS

1. can = saber o poder hacer algo

UseExamples
ability to do sth. in the present
(equivalent form: to be able to)

permission to do sth. in the present
(substitute form: to be allowed to)

2. could = poder o saber algo en el pasado o con idea de pedir un favor o permiso (podría,-s,-amos,-ais, etc)

permission to do sth. in the past
(substitute form: to be allowed to)
could go out  with my friends
when I was 12.

3. may = puede que, podría con idea de pedir permiso o sugerir (podría,-s,-amos,-ais, etc)

polite suggestionMay I help you?

4. might = puede que, podría con idea de pedir permiso o sugerir (podría,-s,-amos,-ais, etc)

UseExamples
possibility (less possible than may) *It might rain today.
hesitant offer *
You are not sure you want to do it
or the person will accept your offer.
Might I help you?

5. must = deber, tener que (obligación y deducción)

Use must when it is a personal obligation, from the person who speaks.
  • must get up early tomorrow. I would like to arrive early.
  • You must see the doctor.
Use the modal must for orders or instructions.
  • You must be on time for the exam and bring a black pen with you.

force, necessitymust study  this lesson now, we have an exam.
possibilityYou must be tired.
advice, recommendationYou must relax and sleep to recover after the trip.

5. have to = tener que

Use have to when there is an external obligation e.g. timetable, weather or administration.
  • Due to a snow storm the pilot has to land in Vancouver.
  • My doctor says I have to stop smoking.

force, necessityhave to get up early tomorrow morning.
possibilityYou must be tired.
advice, recommendationYou must see the new film with Brad Pitt.

6. must not/may not = no se puede, no se debe

UseExamples
prohibition (must is a little stronger)You mustn't work on dad's computer.
You may not work on dad's computer.

7. need not = no hay que

UseExamples
sth. is not necessaryWe needn't call him, he's called me right now.

8. ought to = deberías, -a, -amos, -ais

simliar to should – ought to is less subjective
UseExamples
adviceYou ought to drive slowly, it is raining.
obligationYou ought to pay attention when they talk to you.

9. shall = Hacemos ...?

used instead of will in the 1st person

suggestionShall we go to have a pizza?

10. should = debería, -as, -a, etc.

adviceYou should drive carefully in bad weather.
obligationYou should switch off the light when you leave the room.
